The Vine Dance Philosophy

In the fifteenth chapter of the book of John, Jesus is conveying to His disciples the necessity of abiding in Him to produce the kind of lasting, meaningful fruit for which they were created. He explains, through a familiar and vivid agricultural picture, that He is the Vine, they are the branches, and that to genuinely love others and fully experience His joy, they must first live in His love. In the book of 1 John, the disciple continues this lesson by explaining that we are enabled to live in love only because God first loved us (1 John 4:19). Marrying this same agricultural picture of the vine to the natural growth cycle of a grapevine, we derived our philosophy of instruction: the five elements of flourishing.

The Five Elements of Flourishing

  • All practices of The Vine are rooted in the rich foundational soil of God’s love for us in Christ. It is living from this life-giving truth day-to-day that allows students to thrive in the following areas.

  • Planted firmly in the rich soil of God’s love, students are then showered not only in the knowledge of proper dance technique, but more importantly in the knowledge that they are fearfully and wonderfully made - created perfect and complete, on purpose, with great purpose. Each one, filled to the brim special gifts, talents and abilities that enable them to serve God and those around them in love. Applause, awards, and accolades aren’t required to prove to themselves that they are of great value. They are free from seeking validation from the world because they are already validated, loved, and celebrated by Christ. This refreshing truth frees students to embrace their own God-given dance styles, perform with more confidence, and genuinely celebrate their dance-mates’ achievements in a non-competitive learning environment.

  • Sprouting from the nourishing knowledge of the love and gifts of God come the strong shoots of responsibility and discipline. It’s knowing the value of what they’ve been given and the driving force behind it (love) that urges students to care for and utilize their gifts well. Students will not only learn that the gift of dance deserves careful honing through proper knowledge, technique and practice, practice, practice, but also that dance that makes a difference begins well before the movement. Making the most of this gift also requires caring well for our bodies through proper nutrition, exercise, rest, and emotional regulation. These stabilizing shoots of discipline and responsibility are required to properly set the stage for what it is to come - healthy, vibrant flowers and fruit.

  • Blooming from all that has come before, we begin to see the vibrant flowers of flourishing. Hard work and dedication founded in a safe and encouraging environment allow skill, ability and technique to blossom, taking on a life of their own. A vibrant signal to the world that fruit is imminent.

  • At the culmination of all this growth, students will find themselves well-prepared (body, mind and soul) to use the gifts they’ve been given to return God’s love back to Him in praise and to love others in their community through skillful, uplifting, and inspiring performances. Producing fruit that nourishes their own souls as much as it does the souls of those with whom they share it.
